Australia-No more Mutton dressed as Lamb says Minister.
Tony Burke backs national meat marketing plan
Wednesday, 18/03/2009
Federal Agriuclture minister Tony Burke has backed calls for a national approach to meat marketing in Australia.
Mr Burke says the long debated issue of mutton being labelled as lamb will be discussed at the next council of the country’s agriculture ministers.
The concerns of meat labelling were yesterday extended into the pork industry, where Australian Pork Limited’s Kathleen Plowman explained to Greens senator Christine Milne how much pork meat is actually Australian.
"So how much imported pork is there in products that are churned out as Product of Australia?"
"Oh that’s a bit difficult, but I can say that most of the bacon, ham and smallgoods of what Australian consumers eat is basically imported product."
