AUSTRALIAN SUPERMARKETS ALLOW CUSTOMERS TO CHECKOUT AND PAY FOR OWN GOODS IN JUNE.

Woolworth’s supermarkets (NO CONNECTION WITH WOOLWORTHS UK)will have new technology in place later this month.

The system has been tried and tested in 16 of Woolworth’s supermarkets and has been found to be, customer friendly and time effective.

Mary Hammet Woolworth’s general manager of retail operations explained how the system works.

The touch screen system allows the customer to scan the goods purchased then pay by credit card, the system knows the weight of each item therefore the total weight the shopping basket is placed on a scale at time of payment and the system will verify if the transaction is OK. The self scanning system will start off in 700 stores an June and be in all stores by the end of the year.
