Botswana-Halal Meat.
GABORONE - Retail stores are required to mark and label meat and meat products as ’halaal’ or ’non-halaal’ to enable small-scale chicken meat producers to access the market of chain stores.
A news release from the Ministry of Trade and Industry says under the new regulations, all retail stores are required to display ’halaal meat and meat products’ in clearly visible letters.
Over non-halaal meat it should be marked ’non-halaal meat and meat products’ also in clearly visible letters.
The release states that there will be penalties for the violation of the requirements of the regulations ranging from a fine of P200 or to imprisonment for a term of six months or to both for a first offence, and P400 or one year imprisonment for a second or subsequent offence.
Retailers are asked to familiarise themselves with the provisions of the regulations and to take necessary measures to comply with them.
