Brucellosis compensation

Joint announcement by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs; and the Welsh Assembly Government.

The maximum compensation payable during January 2006 for an animal slaughtered and valued for compensation purposes under the Brucellosis Order 2000 (England), or the equivalent legislation in Wales, because it is affected with Brucellosis, or is a reactor when tested for this disease will be £717.

The amount of compensation is 75% of

Either: (i) The animal's market value

Or: (ii) 125% of the average monthly market price two months before valuation rounded down to the nearest multiple of £4,


whichever is the less.

The figure at (ii) above for January 2006 is £717; (The maximum compensation payable). This figure has been calculated based on the returns for November 2005 from sample markets in Great Britain showing sales of commercial grade Friesian cows and heifers in milk and calf. The average market price for such animals during November 2005 was £766.43.
