BURMA -- The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has donated more poultry to cyclone victims in Laputta township in the country’s Ayeyawaddy division, according to local livestock breeding authorities Sunday.

A total of 15,000 chickens, ducks and pigs were distributed to 16 villages in the township as the FAO’s last batch of aid to help rehabilitation work in the post-storm period.

FAO had donated 80,000 chickens and ducks to cyclone victims in Yangon and Ayeyawaddy divisions in December last year and the poultry were distributed to such storm-hit areas as Bogalay, Phyapon, Dedaye, Latputta, Kyaitlatt, Kungyankon and Kawmu, earlier report said.

According to the regional authorities, a total of 323,246 chickens and 1.247 million ducks were lost in the storm.

Deadly tropical cyclone Nargis hit five divisions and states -Ayeyawaddy, Yangon, Bago, Mon and Kayin on May 2 and 3 last year,of which Ayeyawaddy and Yangon inflicted the heaviest casualties and massive infrastructural damage.


The storm has killed 84,537 people, leaving 53,836 missing and 19,359 injured according to official death toll.
