Cheshire Show Chairman Receives Fellowship for Agriculture

Local farmer and Cheshire Agricultural Society Chairman John Platt OBE, DL has received a top agricultural award from the prestigious Council for Awards of Royal Agricultural Societies of England, Wales and Northern Ireland

Mr Platt, who is 76-years-old, was nominated for the title of Fellowship of the Royal Agricultural Societies (FRAgS) not only because of his involvement in the farming industry but also for his work with the Cheshire Show and Reaseheath College.

The award was one of only fifteen given recently by the English Panel of the Council "in recognition of outstanding service to and achievement within the agricultural industry".

Vic Croxson, Vice Chairman of Cheshire Agricultural Society said: "It's a great honour for John to get this award, which is so richly deserved.

"It has been awarded to him because he is recognised as one of Cheshire's leading dairy farmers as well as for his dedication to the Cheshire Agricultural Society and the hard work and commitment he gives each year to the Cheshire Show."

Tens of thousands of people attend the event, which is the largest two-day county show in the North West region.

This year will see the 16th show taking place at The Tabley Showground, near Knutsford, and each year the show has developed further thanks to its passionate Chairman.

Mr Platt has farming in his blood and is from a long line of farmers. He has worked his farm at Lach Dennis for nearly 40 years, and also owns a farm in Occleston, nr Middlewich.

He is a dairy farmer that breeds Pedigree Holstein's, which are black and white and originate from Western Europe, particularly Holland and North Germany.

Mr Platt is Chairman of Governors at Reaseheath College in Nantwich, which is one of the most successful specialist land-based colleges in the country offering everything from Equine to Business and IT.

The fellowship underlines the importance in the contribution Mr Platt has made to the Cheshire Show and also to the agricultural and countryside activities in this county.

Mr Platt now has the initials FRAgS after his name which accompany his OBE (Order of the British Empire) and his DL (Deputy Lieutenant) for the County of Cheshire.
