Chile-Food markets taking trade from supermarkets.

CHILE.

FOOD PRICES CAUSE PROBLEMS.

The high price of food in Chile, is causing people to turn to alternative food markets.

In December supermarkets recorded the slowest growth since 1991.

Meanwhile the wholesale markets have recorded unprecedented growth.

Lo Valledor in Santiego, the largest food market in Chile, has seen turnover jump by 20pc this year, where 25,000 people are shopping a week buying food in crates to share with families and neighbors.

The markets have increased the car parking from 800 cars to 2,000 cars, as they receive 28,000 clients shopping every weekend.

The trend is causing problems for the supermarkets, with the decline in turnover.

Argentina is the main supplier of beef to Chile, who is self sufficient in lamb and pork and an export country of both meats.
