Coalition announces campaign farm policy

Weeds, pest animals and a review of Australia's quarantine system will be the agricultural focus of a re-elected coalition government.

More than $100 million would be spent over four years on the country's agricultural sector, Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister Peter McGauran said in Sydney.

"Many farmers are bruised and battered, financially and psychologically by the drought, by declining terms of trade, by farm debt," Mr McGauran said.

However, he added, "I'm fervently optimistic about the future of agriculture in this country".

The coalition has committed to funding which includes $15 million to control and eradicate pests and feral animals, $30 million to reduce the impact of weeds, $15 million to expand the National Livestock Identification System, $11 million to establish an Export Partnerships Fund and $10 million to establish an Expanding Australian Food and Beverage Exports Program.
