A council has declined plans for a 540,000 capacity chicken farm to be built in Rushden, Northamptonshire.

East Northamptonshire Council said the application for a poultry farm has been withdrawn, and will not be heard by the Planning Management committee today (28 February).

A reason for the withdrawal has not been given.

Bedfordia Farms wanted to build 10 poultry buildings in Rushden amid fierce local opposition.

A petition gathered 8,000 signatories to oppose the chicken farm, and a local MP said that the farm feels "Un-British".

Peter Bone, the Conservative MP for Wellingborough, told the Commons: "It is no way to treat thinking, feeling creatures. To me, it feels completely un-British."

He said: "These conditions are simply abhorrent."

According to the Northamptonshire Telegraph, planners wanted to build 10 poultry buildings and associated infrastructure on land north east of Westwood Anaerobic Digestion Plant in Bedford Road, Rushden.
