Cultivating farmer champions

Young farmers across Yorkshire and the North East are being given the chance to win a trip to London and the seat of government as part of special competition launched by the North East NFU this month.

The competition follows on from The NFU's Annual Conference in Birmingham in February which focused on the importance of farming for the future and included a sizeable delegation of 'Next Generation' farmers from across the country.

The North East competition is designed encourage young farmers to find out more about the NFU and its work. And says senior food and farming adviser Louise White, the hope is that greater contact with the YFC movement will mean more young people joining the NFU.

The competition is also designed to tie into this year's Why Farming Matters campaign, with entrants asked to say why farming matters to them.

To enter, members of the Young Farmers Club are being asked to answer ten farming-related questions and then, in no more than 250 words, discuss two issues facing farming businesses in Yorkshire and the North East.

The competition offers two prizes. For the over 18s, there's a chance to win a trip to the NFU's London Office followed by a fascinating tour around the House of Commons with the Head of Parliamentary Affairs, Barney Holbeche. Entrants under 18 can win tickets to either The Great Yorkshire Show or Northumberland County Show.

In organising the competition, the NFU attracted sponsorship from both the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and Sustainable Food and Farming Strategy North East. The closing date is Friday 27 April and entry forms can be downloaded from the NFU website: www.nfuonline.com (click on North East under 'Our Offices).
