Euro visit for farmers cooperative Camgrain

Euro-MP Robert Sturdy was joined by Euro election candidates Vicky Ford, John Flack and Jonathan Morgan on a visit to Camgrain, the UK’s largest farmers’ cooperative which provides storage for wheat, barley and other crops from its sites in Linton and West Wratting, near Haverhill.

It also supplies a supply chain for farmers, allowing them to focus on growing productive crops. Last year Camgrain was awarded a £4 million grant from the East of England Development Agency’s Rural Development Progamme - jointly funded by the European Union and Defra. This will enable them to build new state-of-the-art facilities that will be cleaner, greener and more efficient than ever before.

Mr Sturdy said: "I regard Camgrain as a terrific success story as it brings agricultural marketing into the 21st century, enabling farmers to sell their crops knowing they are going to get the best possible price and accessing markets which might not have been previously available."

During the visit, the Conservative delegation met managing director Philip Darke; vice-chairman Charles Fairey, and Simon Ingle, marketing manager of Openfield.

Mr Sturdy said he was impressed at how Camgrain can help make life easier for all farmers, from the smallest family-owned holding to the largest agri-business, enabling them to benefit from their marketing services by selling their crops at optimum prices in an increasingly competitive market.
