The European Commission had already urged to reach that conclusion. During a revision of procedures around admitting new food products, a majority in parliament was found to agree that the selling of products from cloned animals should be banned.

That result was reached despite the outcomes of a report from the European Food Safety Authority (Efsa). Efsa had advised that consuming meat or dairy products from cloned animals do not harm public health, which is a similar outcome to earlier research by the US’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Cloning however, does lead to questions as to animal welfare, as often cloned animals appear to have health problems or die prematurely.
