An entry of 250 store cattle met with a good trade at Bishops Castle Auction on September 22 as the ’1,000 price barrier was broken on more than 25 occasions.
’With a shortage of grass and a good trade, producers seem keen to get their cattle sold slightly earlier than normal,’ said David Bryan-Jones, manager of auctioneers Halls’ Bishops Castle office. ’The significant rise in the beef trade seems to bode well for the upcoming autumn sales.’
Overall averages for steers were 197p per kilo and ’875 per head with highs of ’1,220 for a 560 kilo pair of Limousins from R. E. and C. J. Davies, Boycott Hall and 232p per kilo for three 380 kilo Limousins from D.and H. Moyle of Brynunty.
Heifers averaged 178p per kilo and ’740 per head, peaking at ’995 for a 510 kilo Limousin again from R. E. and C. J. Davies and 208p per kilo for a 330 kilo Limousin from James Edwards, The Mount.
Two cows and calves were entered by W. V. S. Corbett and Co of The Gorther, which both reached ’860 for a Limousin heifer and Limousin heifer calf.

On Saturday, October 1, 4,000 breeding ewes, ewe lambs, grazing ewes went under the hammer alongside a prize sale of store lambs at Bishops Castle Auction.
A prize sale of store cattle for the Tom Gittins Cup will be held on Thursday, October 13 with entries closing on October 6.
Bishops Castle and District Quality Cattle Association is holding a sale of autumn and spring born suckled calves reared on upland farms on Thursday, October 20, with entries closing on October 10.
