Green power exploration

A green gathering is planned this month where a number of organisations will be getting together to discuss renewable energy in sensitive areas.

Renewables in the Park will be looking at environmentally friendly energy options, such as solar, wood fuel, hydro and small-scale wind equipment, for both the Lake District National Park and other designated areas.

Organised by CLAREN – Cumbria and Lancashire Renewables – in partnership with the Lake District National Park Authority, Renewables Northwest, Sustainability Northwest and the Countryside Agency, the event is expected to highlight future green power opportunities.

Lake District National Park Authority's sustainable development adviser Alison Lax said there were many exciting possibilities, but the key to success was finding the right technology to fit with individual needs.

"We have already seen some great examples of renewable energy schemes in community buildings and the possibilities are enormous," she said.

"Renewables in the Park is going to bring many of the area's major organisations, councils and members of the public together so there will be an invaluable sharing of knowledge and opportunities."

With renewable energy prices coming down and conventional sources increasing, there has never been a better time for introducing small-scale green power into communities, even in protected areas, according to Elizabeth Bruce, community renewables manager at CLAREN.

'We will be looking at technologies appropriate for sensitive areas like the National Park, the policies that affect such projects and investigating both funding options and examples of established schemes," she said.

Admission is free for the gathering to be held at Derwent Water Youth Hostel, Barrow House, Borrowdale, on Tuesday, 29 November, from 9.30 am to 3.00 pm.
