German producer of KellyBronze turkeys, Freiland Puten Fahrenzhausen, has won one of the prestigious Pro-Tier Fƶrderpreis awards for animal welfare.
The award came within days of the 21st anniversary celebrations in the UK for the KellyBronze and also of the brand becoming the 'best primary product' in the British Turkey Annual Awards for the second year running.
The German award was presented to Dr Martin Bohn, managing director of Freiland Puten, by Renate KĆ¼nast, Minister for Agriculture, Consumer Protection and Food. The organic poultry producer from the Munich area was one of five out of 50 competitors.
The award is made for keeping animals to a high welfare standard ā€” in this case poultry managed on free range, fed on an organic diet with grass, using natural remedies and the KellyBronze breed.
Freiland Puten has been producing organic poultry products since 1997 and is now the largest producer of organic turkeys in Europe, working with the KellyBronze turkey and with Paul Kelly as an associate. Their products have established a reputation as a 'must' for gourmets. The company has 18 farms in Germany and another 14 producers in Austria, supplying delicatessens, specialist butchers and baby food outlets.
Around 50,000 turkeys are produced a year, sold cut-up fresh or frozen, as sausage or in delicatessen packs. For the past two years the company is also producing free range, organic chicken.
