KENYA-CROP DISEASE.

A new version of a deadly fungus stem rust is sweeping East Africa, however the disease was assumed to have been beaten over 50 years ago and no one understands how it has returned with a vengeance.

The disease affects wheat and the crops die in the ground, apart from East Africa the disease has also been reported in Yemen and parts of the Middle East.

Because there has been no outbreak for the last 50 years, there are no scientist or farmers who know the disease first hand, equally there are no known chemical cures for the epidemic.

A key to the epidemic may lie in the use of GM wheat in the future as there appears no solution to the current crisis.
