Consumers are increasingly turning to the net for information, advice and recipe inspiration for fresh produce, according to Potato Council. The organisation has seen record numbers of visits to its websites in the last twelve months, reaching 1.1million.

Both the Potato Council’s main consumer-facing site www.lovepotatoes.co.uk and its EU campaign portal www.manyfacesofpotatoes.co.uk are packed full of useful information on potato varieties, nutrition and cooking tips and most popular of all, recipe ideas. In fact, there have been over 2million recipe views across both sites in the same period.

Potato Council marketing manager, Kate Cox, said: “The internet and social media are more important than ever before and have become integral to our marketing activity and campaigns in order to raise maximum awareness for potatoes. As such, we have given www.lovepotatoes.co.uk a fresh look and included new sections to provide even more robust health and nutrition information, detail on the new classification system and shopping guidance.

“There are new recipe search functions for each of the ‘fluffy’, ‘salad’ and ‘smooth’ groupings, which can be combined with other store cupboard ingredients to ensure that potatoes remain a mealtime fixture, as well as blogs and videos from the ‘Potato Girls’. Combined with an increased presence across social networking sites and forums, this means we are able to reach more mums and younger consumers to really raise the profile of potatoes as a quick and healthy meal solution.”

Almost two thirds of visits in the last year were as a result of search terms made into sites such as Google, with a quarter of visitors referred from other websites and news articles. This highlights the importance of effective search engine optimisation and developing web links across relevant sites.

Kate said: “We ensure that all of our marketing material and PR has a very clear reference to our sites and that above all, the content is informative and regularly updated. Of course, if any growers, suppliers – or indeed, anyone involved in the potato supply chain – would like to reference our informative site www.lovepotatoes.co.uk we would be more than happy for them to do so.”
