Natural additive cuts cell counts

Ropadairy is a feed additive for dairy cows which contains natural oils extracted from the oregano herb. This is said to have properties which can be effective against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and E coli.

Made in the Netherlands, where it has been thoroughly researched, it is being introduced to the Britain by G E Baker (UK) Ltd, Woolpit, Suffolk.

On-farm trials have shown a reduction in the somatic cell counts (SCC) resulting in an improvement in health and increases in yield by up to 2 litres per cow a day.

Available as a powder, Ropadairy is added to the feed to provide a dosage rate of 5-7 g per cow per day. Its antioxidant properties help to keep down the temperature of the total mixed ration (TMR) so that the feed remains more appetising.

Available as a powder it is supplied in 25 kg bags or 10 kg tubs and, being a natural product, no withdrawal is necessary.

UK farmers using a similar product for pigs – introduced by G E Baker last year – have already reported improved reductions in scouring and increased growth rates, says company director, Graham Baker.
