New SOLA’s for Quell Flo on poppies, bulb onions and shallots
The protectant mancozeb fungicides Quell Flo and Laminator FL have new SOLA's for use on poppies grown for morphine production, bulb onions and shallots, adding to the limited number of fungicides that are recommended in these specialist crops. Quell Flo and Laminator FL will protect primarily against downy mildew (Peronospora arborescens) and have a bonus effect on other diseases such as Botrytis.
Dr. David Stormonth, Technical Manager for Interfarm UK explains that, with continuing global problems in the production and supply of Dithane 945 and Dithane NT, these new SOLA's offer growers alternative solutions in the form of Quell Flo/Laminator FL.
"Both Quell Flo and Laminator FL are suspension concentrates of mancozeb and are registered for the same crop range as Dithane products. As liquid formulations, Quell Flo/Laminator FL disperse easily in the spray tank and have no problems of dust. The active ingredient mancozeb is recommended on over 70 different crops for the control of over 400 diseases globally and is regarded as a very cost-effective protectant fungicide. As a multi-site fungicide, it also offers an anti-resistance component to any spray programme."
The SOLA for bulb onions and shallots (reference numbers 1907/2008 and 1908/2008) specifies a dose rate of 4.2 l/ha with a total maximum total dose of 16.8 l/ha (equivalent to four sprays) and a latest time of application of 28 days before harvest. The SOLA for poppies for morphine production (reference numbers 1910/2008 and 1909/2008) specifies a dose rate of 2.7 l/ha and a latest time of application of end of stem extension.
"Mancozeb is a strong multi-site protectant fungicide, but it also contains manganese and zinc. This means that crops are not only well protected, but also receive additional trace element nutrition. One litre of Quell Flo or Laminator FL contains 93 gms of manganese and 8.7 gms of zinc, adding to crop nutrition," says Dr. David Stormonth.
Quell Flo/Laminator FL contain 455g/L mancozeb formulated as a suspension concentrate and packed in 10 litre containers. They have label approvals in the UK for use in potatoes, winter wheat, spring wheat and winter oilseed rape. They have no LERAP and are rainfast in one hour.
