Official report says bird flu is contained‏

Defra has published its epidemiological report into the recent Avian Influenza outbreak at a farm in Suffolk. While it draws no definitive conclusions as to its source, epidemiological investigations indicate a 99.8 per cent match to infection found in wild birds (Mute Swan) in the Czech Republic in mid 2007.

Testing on surrounding poultry premises, and testing of wild birds in the area, all indicate the infection did not spread beyond the initial two infected premises.

NFU poultry board chairman Charles Bourns said: "This outbreak was swiftly and efficiently contained thanks to the work of Defra, 'Animal Health' and the poultry farming industry. This infection clearly demonstrates the importance of contingency planning and cooperation between the government and industry. Swift diagnosis, control and eradication have clearly prevented further spread.

"This incident reinforces the importance of bio-security and vigilance that is thankfully the norm across the industry. Biosecurity is hugely important to the poultry sector, especially free range, where specific standards exist, such as those in the Red Tractor standards, to prevent the spread of disease and maintain good flock health."
