• Imports of fresh and frozen pork to the nited Kingdom slightly decreased in volume in December, by 1 percent on the previous year. However, over the same period, value fell by 18 percent, illustrating how the value of European Union pork has fallen over the last 12 months, putting pressure on United Kingdom prices.

• Provisional figures from the January pig census show the Danish pig herd stable in 2015. However, there was some movement in the number of breeding and young pigs.

Declines were particularly prevalent for in-pig sows (-3 percent) and in-pig gilts (-4 percent), whilst maiden gilts saw a 10 percent increase.

This suggests rationalisation of the breeding herd, whilst the falling pig price may be prompting delays in serving some maiden gilts.
