Joss Vincent, Nickerson protein crops product manager, and Keith Fox, the company's senior pea breeder, examine the spring pea trials at the PGRO member's day held at PGRO headquarters, Thornhaugh, Peterborough this week.
"In the past, growers often ran the risk of their pea harvest conflicting with the wheat harvest. Now early-maturing varieties like Zero4 (shown in attached picture) restore the harvest window between winter barley and winter wheat," said Mr. Vincent. "Today's varieties also offer improved agronomy with excellent standing ability and short straw.
"There has never been a better opportunity to get into protein crops with good markets and good margins – and the bonus of the residual nitrogen benefit that is worth around £25-30/ha," he added.
