A gang of quad bikers has run over and killed 23 sheep in the Cotswolds, a farmer has said.

They are also destroying property, letting livestock loose and stealing equipment, it is claimed.

The National Farmers Union has demanded action from Gloucestershire police and said up to 30 similar incidents have been reported in the last three weeks.

Farmer Toby Baxter, based near Cirencester, said 23 of his sheep appeared to have been run over and killed.

The horrific incident on his land happened about two and a half weeks ago and the dead sheep were discovered by a horrified walker.

Mr Baxter said locals have seen the quad bike gang in the area recently tearing through fields and damaging property.

Mr Baxter, 43, who has 4,700 sheep, as well an arable side to the business, said: ""We obviously don't know exactly who did it.

"Someone came and was joyriding and ran over 19 sheep, and four others had to be shot.

"It was discovered by someone walking their dog the next morning who had to ring us up and tell us we had dead sheep all over the field.

"We have a road running through the field, but they came off it and were driving all over the green land."

The sheep which were killed were worth around £90 each, and were part of a flock of 550

The incident came a week before around £18,000 worth of farming equipment was stolen from Mr Baxter - including his car, quad, trailer and tools.
