Egg producers with more than 350 hens are likely to have to register with the Egg Marketing Inspectorate even if they are exempt from the egg stamping requirements which come into force on Jan 1, 2004.
In a consultation document released last week, DEFRA says English producers with more than 350 hens would have to register to obtain a distinguishing number. This number will be needed for all producers selling Grade A eggs from Jan 1, 2004, when stamping eggs to identify the production method and origin comes into force under an EU directive.
But DEFRA says even those exempt from stamping requirements with more than 350 hens - selling eggs, other than class A, direct to consumers - would be required to provide details to the registrar.
Although not required to register, producers with fewer than 350 hens will also have to supply some details to the registrar to obtain a distinguishing number if they intend to stamp eggs. The consultation ends on Oct 9.
