South Africa-Dairy farmers in trouble.
SOUTH AFRICA.
DAIRY INDUSTRY.
The largest dairy company in South Africa Clover, has applied to the government for assistance, in regard to the prices they can charge for products.
The recently imposed legislation in South Africa, deregulated the dairy industry and brought an end to the subsidy system, that the dairy industry has enjoyed for years.
The economic downturn, has seen the demand for milk drop therefore the prices have fallen, leaving dairy farmers with no option, other than to sell cows for slaughter.
The deputy CEO of Clover Manie Roode, said, "the industries woes are being caused by the competition committee that called for de-regulation of the dairy sector, without intelligent new regulations".
The government of South Africa, is believed to have a sympathetic ear to the farmers plight, as milk is vital for the nutrition and health of the population
