SUPERMARKET Sainsbury is launching a scheme to help small food businesses develop
This is the first time that the retailer's supplier development programme, started in 1998, has specifically targeted smaller companies.
Twelve south-western businesses, that have not worked with the store or have a turnover less than £30,000, will take part in the 12-week programme.
Run in conjunction with South West Food & Drink, the new regional trade organisation, topics will include practical issues such as ordering, delivery, paperwork and technical requirements.
Jane Wakeling, regionality manager, said another course is planned for Wales and further regions of the UK could be covered if these prove a success.
She said that 67 companies have been involved with previous schemes under the SDP, generating cumulative growth of over £40m.
Farmers who want to get involved can talk to Ms Wakeling and her team at agricultural shows throughout the summer or call Sainsbury's London head office.
