Taiwan-Foot and Mouth Disease confirmed.
Taiwan kills 600 pigs to contain spread of foot and mouth disease An official says Taiwan has killed more than 600 pigs to contain the spread of foot and mouth disease in central Taiwan.
Kuo Niu-che, a quarantine official in Changhua County, says the pigs were culled at a farm Wednesday. He says the action was taken after several pigs displaying symptoms of foot and mouth tested positive for the disease.
Kuo says animal farms in the area have been disinfected and pigs there vaccinated.
Taiwan last suffered a major outbreak of foot and mouth in 1997. The disease does not sicken humans but is highly contagious among other mammals, especially cattle and pigs.
