Take advantage of every remaining spray window and don’t be put off by the odd frost
That’s the message from Bayer CropScience for growers who’ve not yet made applications of Atlantis WG. With black-grass well advanced following excellent growing conditions, early treatment should remain high on the agenda.
"If target weeds are actively growing and ground conditions permit travel, growers should be looking to make headway with Atlantis treatments," says Bayer CropScience’s Gordon Anderson Taylor. "It is better to apply Atlantis going into a cold period than coming out of one, and Atlantis can be applied during frosty weather provided day-time temperatures support active growth."
After the relative warmth of early November, temperatures are now approaching ’normal’ for the time of year, with occasional night-time frosts. However, soil temperatures across most of the country remain good. Trials by Bayer CropScience and others continue to show that autumn-applied Atlantis with a residual partner can deliver best black-grass control and yield protection.
"Ideally avoid applying Atlantis immediately before a severe night frost but cold temperatures after application will not reduce efficacy, although they may slow the speed of activity," says Dr Anderson-Taylor.
With spray opportunities decreasing over the next few weeks, and decreasing daylength narrowing spray windows, Bayer is reminding growers of the importance of good application technique to get the best from Atlantis.
"Correct nozzles, a forward speed of 12kph or less, and appropriate boom height are all essential," he reiterates. "Avoid waterlogged conditions and long periods of frosted ground as the crop and weed will not be actively growing and ensure that weed leaves are dry. Autumn applications must always be made with biopower and a residual partner."
