Devro the sausage skin maker, has appointed Steve Hannam, former chair of Associated British Foods, as its new chairman.

Hannam, who chaired AB Foods between 2002 and 2004, will replace Pat Barrett, Devro’s chairman since 2001, at the Moodiesburn group’s annual meeting next month.

Currently the senior independent director at textiles company Low & Bonar, Hannam previously worked in the chemicals industry, including more than a decade as an executive at BTP.

That stint included six years as chief executive, culminating in a £1.1 billion sale to Swiss chemicals group Clariant in 2000.

Hannam has also been chairman of Aviagen, the poultry specialist, where he worked briefly with Peter Page, Devro’s current chief executive.

Barrett said Hannam’s experience was "ideally suited" to Devro.
