BUYING FOOD FOR THE POOR.

The United Nations World Food Program, backed by Bill Gates and Howard Buffet, said on Wednesday it would buy surplus crops directly from poor farmers in Africa and Central America to feed people facing Starvation.

The purchase program project will help farmers to produce more food and being able to sell the surplus they will in turn increase their own profits.

The project has been backed by $76 million in grants from charitable organizations, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Howard Buffet Foundation.

Josette Sheeran of the World Food Program , said "When we are finished these pilots, we will then take the lessons we’ve learned and hopefully change the way we do business to be able to help farmers increase their yields so they will no longer require food assistance".
