United States-New rendering laws postponed.

UNITED STATES-BAN ON CARCASS GOING INTO BY PRODUCTS.

In less than a month, the new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation bans the use of these carcasses in livestock feed if the cattle are over 30 months of age. Members of Congress are asking the federal government to delay new rules from taking effect April 27th.

Led by Nebraska Congressman Adrian Smith and Missouri Rep. Roy Blunt, the lawmakers say the new rules create problems for getting rid of cattle carcasses. Smith and Blunt has written a letter to the FDA to extend the deadline. Smith says it is essential to have a "Good Plan" in place before the ban take effect.

Smith says we want a strong food safety requirements. We want to have a good handle on things like that, but we need a good plan and we need a viable place for disposal. The markets are tough in place and we don’t want to make it any more difficult than it already is.

This FDA regulation is intended to prevent the spread of BSE by prohibiting the use of brains or spinal cords of older cattle as ingredients livestock feed and pet food. This will likely result in increased disposal costs for livestock producers and put rendering plants out of business.
