Following exhaustive laboratory and field testing, Valtra have now approved B100 biodiesel for 100% use in all engines, including Sisu's latest Common Rail units used in Tier 3 compliant tractors.
The biodiesel fuel must comply with EN 14214 or ASTM D 6751 standards. In Europe biodiesel is typically rape methyl ester (RME) and must be esterified (in North America soy methyl ester (SOME) is generally used). Non-esterified,
cold-pressed or other biodiesel fuel not conforming to the above standards should not be used.
SisuDiesel's engines do not need to be modified before using biodiesel. However, it is recommended that when using biodiesel in any diesel engine, the engine oil, oil filter and fuel filter should be changed more frequently than the normal service interval for mineral oil fuels. This is due to a deposit produced by biodiesel which reduces the lubrication properties of engine oil. Additionally, when biodiesel is used in Common Rail Engines an additional pre-filter should be fitted between the fuel tank and the engine. Biodiesel is extremely hygroscopic and the additional filter will help remove any water.
