The Ministry of Agriculture in Vietnam, in encouraging a move into intensive farming for pigs, poultry and beef, as opposed to the traditional method of back yard small holdings.

The bold plan, expects to be in a position to produce 3.2 million tons of meat by 2010, and a staggering 5.5 million tons by 2020.

The head of the Vietnam Cattle Breeders Association, DO Kim Tuyen, said "the targets for the next 12 years are to upgrade our abattoirs to export standards and become a meat exporting nation. We believe by the year 2020 per capita out put will be 56 kilos of meat and 10 liters of milk per person in our country".

Vietnam currently imports 50% of animal feed, this will be overcome by processing rice grass and sugar cane, as well as animal by products, according to the minister.
