Volatile market for veal

The overseas market for British calves could develop and grow in the medium term as veal production in Europe is likely to fall.

British farmers have been able to move back into this market since the export ban was lifted earlier this year and things have changed dramatically in the last ten years they were absent. There has been a fundamental change in production systems as producers gear up for changes in EU legislation which come into effect at the end of this year. Calves are now housed in groups in well-lit accommodation with sophisticated electronic feeding systems and controlled ventilation.

This assessment of veal production and the opportunities for British farmers is just one of the major articles in the latest issue of Meat Demand Trends, produced by the Meat and Livestock Commission's Economics section. The latest issue also takes a good look at the nutritional standards for school meal in England.

Economic indicators, retail meat and producer prices together with expenditure and meat consumption are also included giving a comprehensive overview of red meat production. Copies of Meat Demand Trends cost £40 and are available by contacting Jayne Dines on 01908 844396, email jayne_dines@mlc.org.uk.
