Waste not, want not
A new £4 million state of the art, In Vessel Composting System (IVCS) which is the first of its kind in Kent, is now in operation in Ridham. The site, belonging to Countrystyle Composting Ltd, is set to help companies throughout the South East answer the growing call to recycle organic waste.
Mounting concerns over climate change has led to the government encouraging us to increase the amount of sensitive material that we recycle. It is anticipated that the new plant is set to become a major asset to businesses in the region.
A strictly regulated process, the site is currently undergoing the necessary trials to ensure it meets all of the criteria required to produce a safe, fit for purpose end product.
During this trial period, Countrystyle is receiving extremely positive reactions from the local authorities. "It's very encouraging to hear the requests from waste producers for us to process their organic waste," said Niall Cormac-Walshe, General Manager at the site. "The new facility is providing a viable, sustainable alternative to landfill and other forms of dumping grounds, which is a huge benefit to the environment. It gives us great comfort that we can look to build long term relationships with our clients, to the benefit of all."

Capable of processing 35,000 tonnes of both domestic and commercial organic waste a year, the facility will provide a range of reusable, peat free and sustainable end products. A huge bonus for land owners in light of accelerating fertiliser costs. Suitable for agriculture, landscaping, parks, gardens and orchards, these products will effectively support area rejuvenation. Soil conditioning, improved soil structure, mulch, micro-organism growth promotion and weed suppression are just some of the many outcomes of this system.
A fully enclosed operation, the site combines an organic waste reception-processing building with six IVC bunkers. Complete with ventilated floors and wireless data logging probes, each bunker is equipped to send a constant stream of data back to the central control computer. The pasteurisation cycle can then be managed at all times to comply with ABPR (Animal By Products Regulations). This ensures conformities such as weed seed destruction and EU composting standards are met.
