Western Australia-Bonus for top quality lambs.

The Western Australian Meat Marketing Cooperative (WAMMCO) has launched a reward system for WA prime lamb producers.

The program called Wammco Select measures carcass lean meat yield, using VISAscan technology.

Prime crossbred lamb carcasses in the top 15 per cent will return a five per cent premium, which currently equates to about $5 a carcass.

WAMMCO’s chairman, Narrogin prime lamb producer, Dawson Bradford, says the technology will also help producers select prime lamb dams and sires.

"It’s certainly, I believe, a great day for producers in Western Australia, mainly because we’re at last being paid for what we produce and we’re producing lean meat," he says.

"This is the first time in my lifetime that we’ve been recognised for producing lean meat."
