The farmers groups have demanded assistance, for farmers who have suffered from this years drought, similar to the assistance that has been given to farmers in Australia and New Zealand.

There have been over 300,000 cattle, lost in the drought in the north of the country this summer.


The Agricultural Secretary stated in a press release on Wednesday, that those farmers who have suffered, will be compensated by the government The President of Argentina Christina Fernandez de Kirchner, has expressed concern for farmers in Chaco, La Pampa, Cordoba and Santa Fe provinces, who have suffered the most from the lack of rain this year.

As a drought situation is alien to Argentina, there are no measures in place to deal with the compensating farmers. The farmers groups believe that a figure of US$165 million will be required, for beef and dairy farmers.

Government sources have confirmed the figure of 300,000 cattle lost this season.

Argentina normally enjoys an excellent rainfall all over the country.

In 2007 we had the coldest winter since 1919 and a noticeable lack of rain, now it is the hottest summer in 55 years.
