Argentine farmers announce suspension of grain exports and limitation of beef exports

Argentine farmers say they will suspend grain exports and limit beef exports temporarily to protest against sluggish progress in talks with the government.

The global downturn has resulted in plummeting demand for their soy, wheat, corn and beef amid the worst drought in more than a generation.

Leaders from Argentina’s four main farm organizations said the protest measures, which will run from Friday to Tuesday, are meant to stress the urgency of a more effective response from the government.

Thursday’s announcement came minutes after the leaders were summoned for a meeting with the production minister, one of their key demands. While they welcomed the call to dialogue, Argentine Rural Confederation head Mario Llambias said it is taking far to long for the government to respond.
