FISHING QUOTA.

The National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development(INIDEP), has put a ceiling on the fishing of squid at 253,000 tons, between February and June 2009.

The tonnage was estimated by INIDEP, based on the estimates of fish that will be taken by foreign vessels, operating outside the 200 mile zone.

According to a report released on Saturday, catches are based on 42% of on the total tonnage that will be landed of 593,000 tons.

Although the presence of foreign vessels during the current season, has been less than previous years, there are still concerns regarding over fishing and depleting stocks of fish in particular hake.

A new report published in the Canada this week, from the University of British Colombia, shows that poultry and pig farms, consume 28 million tons of fish product a year.

The report shows that 90 % of all small fish caught, end up in fish meal for animals, rather than going back into the sea to reach maturity.

This includes anchovies, sardines and mackerel, that should be going for human consumption, more so now with the current food shortage.

The executive director of the Pew Institute of Ocean Technology, Dr Ellen Pikitch, said "It defies reason to drain the ocean of small fish that could be directly consumed by people In order to produce a lesser quality of farmed fish".
