FARM PROTESTS MAY RESUME IN FEBRUARY.

The head of the SRA Argentine Rural Society Hugo Biolcati, warned on Monday that farmers could resume their protests in February or March 2009, due to the government’s lack of response to the farmers demands.

"The government is provoking farmers, forcing them to protest", according to Biolcati.

Last week President Christina Fernandez de Kirchner, announced measures for the agricultural sector. The farmers who this year were involved in a four month long strike over the increase of export taxes on soy, criticized the measures which did not include a reduction in the tax on soy.

The farmers associations liaison committee, issued a communiqué saying that the measures that already been announced were not sufficient-asking for dialogue with government to discuss matters further. Following the announcement the talks of further disputes were mentioned by the farmers.

Biolcoti went on to say, " We never thought the people of Argentina would support the roadblocks which were only partial, however the memory that is left is that we occupied the roads and that is not correct". The people of Argentina became incensed with the government and the farmers during the dispute, which meant food and food shortages in the cities.

The government are going top have to deal with this problem insiders believe, in order to avoid a situation like this year. The farmers have a case for the reduction in soy tax as prices have fallen 50% in the last three months.
