Blackrock Angus stud’s 38th annual bull sale held at Boyanup last Thursday posted a $15,500 top and reinforced the old saying ’good cattle will always sell well.’

The MacLeay family presented an extremely even catalogue of quality Angus bulls representing an array of leading Australian and international genetics.

At the fall of the final hammer, the Elders team had cleared 42 bulls under the hammer to average $4714, a marked $674 elevation in averages on last year’s result.

Testament to the depth of quality through the catalogue, it wasn’t until lot 31 that the sale’s $15,500 top price was achieved.

Toodyay grazier Adrian MacDermott outbid the competition on Blackrock C112, an AI-bred son of Te Mania You Ripper and out of Blackrock heifer A235.

The big, sleek bull had plenty of volume and growth which was backed by some fantastic figures to match his physical presence.

He measured +4.8 BW, +40 200 day, +84 400 day and +110 600 day weights, +104 MCW, +2.8 SC (44cm), +61 CWT, +3.1 EMA, +102 long fed, +85 heavy grass fed and +73 short fed indexes.

This placed him in the breed’s top 5pc for 400 and 600 day weights and scrotal circumference, top 10pc for carcase weight and heavy grass fed and top 15pc for long and short fed indexes.

After paying the $25,000 state record for a Blackrock bull in 2007, Waroona grazier Robin Oremek. Waratah Rise, made his mark on this year’s sale when he paid the sale’s $15,000 second top price for Blackrock C74.

Return buyer and prominent commercial Angus breeder Epasco Farms manager Rod Taylor, Esperance, was again among the top prices paying to a top of $10,250 for his team of three bulls.
