An increase in consumer demand for food produced with animal welfare in mind has become a growing business for the RSPCA.

The animal welfare group will launch updated accreditation standards for egg and pork producers in March.

The RSPCA will also expand its animal welfare friendly range of food on supermarket shelves, as well as in restaurants.

Chief executive Heather Neil says a similar accreditation and labelling system is being considered for beef and lamb.

"We know there are many farmers who are doing fantastic things for welfare on their farms,’ she says.

"We’ll be looking, later this year, at the feasibility of introducing something for extensive farmers. We’re not quite sure what that’ll be yet."
