THE Bio-security in Queensland a specialist unit of the Department of Primary Industries is paying $150 for cattle brains and $25 for sheep brains to test for BSE.The scheme was set up to prove that Australia is BSE free, therefore giving peace of mind to customers.

The way the system works is, that if a farmer gets an animal with a suspicious illness and has to have it put down, by the knocker man or local slaughterhouse, he sends the brain for analysis and this way is sure that there is or is not BSE on his farm.

The government pay him $150 for each beast or $25 for each sheep and to date 1500 cattle and 300 sheep have been tested.The farmers are rewarded and the industry keeps a good name, of all the brains tested so far, there has been so signs of BSE.

When you consider how lax the laws are in regard to TB, which is a fatal disease to humans, or bruccelosis which is a blood disease that causes contagious abortion, perhaps more evidence is required into the severity of BSE and if it can in fact be contacted by humans.

The relaxing of the laws in regard to feeding animal by products makes sense, as perhaps they should never have been imposed in the first place and are in fact a red herring..

Meat and Bone-meal has been fed to cattle in nuts, cake or meal form since 1890 to no adverse effect only allegedly in 1996.

To say that you can feed meat and bone meal to pigs and poultry yet not to cattle makes no sense at all.If you are allergic to Dairy products, you cannot eat ice cream alone and not any other dairy food, Assuming BSE is transferred in meat and bone-meal, the new legislation suggests. This suggests you can catch it from eating beef but not from eating chicken, eggs or pork.

This indeed would make it a very selective and intelligent virus.In the fifties, sixties and seventies cattle were taken down to the local slaughterhouse with the Staggers, killed and into the food chain. BSE is not new only the name mad cow disease.

Today TB and Brucelosis Reators go into the food chain with no adverse effect., Myth or Reality, that is the question, when it comes to BSE, not forgetting the British Ministry of Agriculture scientists, who based their findings in cattle on analysing sheep’s blood for two years, then it took a further 2 years to realize the mistake or at least admit it.

The system in Australia is fantastic and gives comfort to the farmer and customer, it will also serve as an early warning device and gives total transparency
