Australia-Call for Camel cull in The Outback.
Central Australian pastoralists have renewed their calls for a major cross-border cull of feral camels.
While many believe there is potential for cattle stations to run camels as a commercial meat operation, Ashleigh Severin of Curtin Springs Station near Uluru says that will not work unless the size of the herd is slashed.
Mr Severin told Stateline he is shooting more than 1,000 feral camels on his station each year and it is still nowhere near what is needed.
"I use the word exterminate," he said.
"It’s an introduced pest. It has got a small usage. Yes, we eat camel meat occasionally.
"As for a commercial thing, you won’t get rid of it commercially unless you exterminate them, bring them back to a manageable number, put them behind wire and then you can start again."
