Thursday livestock summary

At Dalby there was a large lift in supply and quality was mixed. Calves to slaughter lost 4¢, and restocker lines improved to average 189.2¢ with sales to 214.2c/kg. Vealer steers purchased by restockers averaged 189¢/kg. Vealer heifers to the trade lost 4¢ to 7¢ with feeder grades at 163¢ and slaughter lines making 158¢/kg. Yearling steers to feeders averaged from 172¢ to 176¢/kg. Medium weight grown steers averaged 5¢ better at 168¢ while heavy steers to export made close to 161¢/kg. Medium weight cows averaged 2¢ less at 112¢ while the heavy cows were 2¢ cheaper at 132¢/kg.
The number of cattle yarded was down slightly at Casino. Quality of the young cattle was mixed. Light vealers lost 14¢ while medium weights were 10¢/kg cheaper. The light penning of yearlings sold according to quality at cheaper rates. The market for grown steers and bullocks held firm, while the cow market was down by 2¢ to 5¢/kg.
At Warrnambool, numbers were down slightly as was the overall quality of the offering. Trade vealer and yearling steers were 3¢ to 10¢/kg cheaper. Heavy grown steers were firm and made from 145¢ to 164¢ to average around 158¢/kg. Bullocks sold from 150¢ to 155¢/kg. Cows lost 3¢ to 5¢ as the medium weight D3 cows sold from 106¢ to 128¢/kg.
At the close of Wednesday’s markets the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished 3.5¢ lower than last week at 318.75¢/kg cwt. Trade steers gained 5¢ to 179.1¢, while medium steers were firm at 155.6¢/kg. Feeder steers were 3¢ dearer at 169.1¢/kg. Japan Ox was unchanged on last week at 159.3¢ and US cow were 3¢ cheaper at 120.1¢/kg.
At Hamilton lamb supply increased in a mixed quality selection. The usual buyers attended but not all operated. Lightweight restocking lambs were cheaper. Trade lambs averaged $3 to $6 cheaper as most sold around $90 to $112/head and averaged 460¢/kg cwt. Heavy lambs were $2 to $4/head easier though later sales were fully firm as the majority sold for $111 and $130.60/head to average around 475¢/kg cwt. An extra heavy pen topped at $135/head.
At the close of Wednesday’s markets the eastern states sheep and lamb indicators experienced a mixed trend from last week. Restocking lambs were 5¢ cheaper at 413¢, while Merino lamb jumped 12¢ to settle at 382¢/kg cwt. Light lamb lost 24¢ to 389¢, trade lamb was 12¢ cheaper at 456¢, and heavy lamb declined 9¢ to finish at 458¢/kg cwt. Mutton was 10¢ higher at 237¢/kg cwt.
