AUSTRALIA-CATTLE MARKETS.

Numbers fell at Dalby due values slipping the previous sale. Calves and vealers were cheaper by 10¢ to 12¢/kg. However, yearling grades only suffered small losses of 3¢ to 4¢ and feeder descriptions held firm to 3¢/kg dearer. Export grades of heavyweight steers and bullocks lost a further 2¢ to 4¢ and cows were cheaper by 3¢ to 4¢/kg.

The yarding at Casino lifted with more grown cattle penned and overall quality was good. Medium weight vealers were down by 8¢ to 9¢, toping at 176¢/kg. The limited supply of yearling heifers averaged 154¢/kg. Bullocks and steers ranged from 5¢ to 9¢ cheaper and heifers made to 153¢/kg. Good quality cows were 4¢ to 6¢ cheaper, while light and medium weights were down by 1¢ to 3¢/kg.

Fewer cattle were yarded at Warrnambool in a firm to dearer market. Young trade cattle improved 5¢ to 8¢/kg. Feeders and restockers were strong in competition as prices reached 182¢/kg. Grown steers sold at similar rates to reach 178¢, while the heifer portion improved 5¢/kg in value. Cows remained firm to 5¢ dearer as the better finished D3 and D4’s sold to a top of 138¢/kg.

At the completion of Wednesday markets, the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) improved 1.75¢ – to 321¢/kg cwt. The trade steer indicator lifted 6¢ – to 176¢ whilst feeder steers rose 4¢ – to 169¢/kg. The Japan ox lost 4¢ – to 164¢ and US cow slipped 3¢ to settle at 124¢/kg.

At Hamilton there were less lambs yarded and quality was mixed. The lightweight lambs made $56 to $78 with restockers paying to $85/head. Lightweight processing lambs averaged 415¢/kg cwt. Prices for trade lambs were firm and made a top of $116/head to average 440¢ to 490¢/kg cwt.. The heavy lambs sold from $112 to $130 with the odd extra heavy pen at $136.20/head as most averaged 465¢/kg cwt.

At the close of Wednesday’s markets, the eastern states sheep and lamb indicators experienced a mixed trend from last week. Restocking lambs were 7¢ cheaper at 409¢ and Merino lamb dropped 2¢ to 368¢/kg cwt. Light lamb declined 5¢ to 387¢/kg cwt. Trade and heavy lamb gained 15¢ to finish at 452¢ and 461¢/kg cwt respectively. Mutton lost 6¢ to 214¢/kg cwt.
