Who would have believed that Holstein heifer calves, that could be bought two years ago for $40, would now be making $600 plus.
There are prices up to $1,200, being paid for un-joined Holstein heifers and over $2,000 for in calf heifers.
This is great news for the dairy industry, its so good to see some life back in the trade.
The thing now is to finish off the bull calves, as they do in Europe and Argentina. This great valuable commodity of potential beef, is still being discarded as bobby veal at ridiculously low prices, slaughtered at a few days old.
This trade was outgrown in Europe 30 years ago,
