Australia-Hereford stud bull sales.

IT WAS the end of an era with the sale of 10 Poll Hereford bulls from the now-dispersed South Australian, Heatherdale Poll Hereford stud last week.

Following the Ardno sale at Wingeel, Keith and Laurice Bennett bade farewell to the last of their stud cattle with 10 bulls sold to $15,000, averaging $6100.

The top-price bull Heatherdale Executor C51 by Kayne Southern Star X133 out of Heatherdale Almond Queen Z19, was purchased by Ivan Chandler’s Chandivan Poll Hereford stud, Barham, New South Wales.

Bluey Commins, Nunniong Herefords, Ensay, paid $10,000 for Heatherdale Prospector C58 by the Heatherdale Sovereign VII sire.

Duncan McGugan, Braunxholme, selected a son of Debarry Highlander 2 for $7500, with C Vera Estate, Leslie Manor, taking a son of Debarry Petri for $6500.


Leigh Allen, Narracoorte, was the guest auctioneer.

Prior to the Heatherdale sale, Hereford bulls sold to a whopping $25,000 at the 50th annual Ardno bull sale.

A crowd of more than 300 pushed results to an average of $5800 for the 30 Hereford bulls sold.

Poll Hereford bulls topped at $13,000 for an average $4500.

The top-price bull, secured by Barry and Topsy Newcomen, Newcomen Herefords, Ensay, Ardno Czech, was by Ardno Zubin and ranked in the top 5 per cent for 400-day growth and the top 10pc for 600-day growth and carcase weight.

Close behind, Ardno Calypso by Faulkand Legion went for $21,000 to the Fraser Family’s Red Hill Hereford stud, Euroa.

The bull was ranked in the top 5pc for 400- and 600-day growth and eye muscle area, and will be used as an outcross sire. Neville McClure, Mooree, Heywood, selected a big, growthy son of Mawarra Oasis 2 for $10,000.


Beggan Hill Herefords, Harden, NSW, paid $13,000 for a son of Faulkland Legion which ranked in the top 1pc for 400 and 600-day weight.

Alva Downs paid $13,000 for a son of Sugarload Cracor.

Casterton producers PT&JA Carey paid to $6500 for three bulls averaging $5000.

Ardno Poll Hereford bulls topped at $13,000 with neighbours Ellingerrin Pastoral Company selecting a son of Debarry Highlander 2 out of a Heatherdale Almond Joy female.

The five yearling stud heifers sold to $3500, Tarcoola Herefords, Casterton, picking up the top-price heifers and a further two at $3250, all daughters of the $52,000 bull Mawarra Sandstorm.
