BOOM IN LIVE CATTLE SHIPPING.

Live cattle exports for the first 10 months of 2008 from Australia, were 699,000 head of cattle, with 5344,409 head going to Indonesia, which in an increase of 12% on 2007.

In October the numbers were 74,431 head, in total cattle shipped and 53,297 of these cattle went to Indonesia.

Indonesia also took 30,000 tons of frozen boxed beef, from Australian meat plants.

Israel bought 9608 head of cattle in October, they have been out of the market since May.

Libya took 35,122 head of cattle for the first 10 months of the year making Libya the second most important market for live cattle.

Libya went to Australia for cattle in 1996, after the BSE restrictions in Ireland. The operation was set up by the Purcell brothers in Waterford, who have supplied Libya since 1972.

Russia purchased 3,469 head of dairy cattle and breeding stock, Japan 1,500 head of breeding cattle, China 1,988 head, and Pakistan 2,499 head during the month of October.

The Gulf States took their big numbers in November, in preparation for the Eid.
