AUSTRALIA-Live export banks on James Point

CONSTRUCTION of a port at James Point could begin as early as this year, according to Transport Minister Simon O’Brien.

Mr O’Brien made the comment while opening the recent Agriculture Protection Board (APB) and Pastoralists and Graziers Association (PGA) Pastoral conference.

He said the amount of trade going through the Fremantle port was an issue.

"There are currently divergent views on the importance of trade through the Fremantle harbour," he said.

"The James Point port idea was floated back in1999 but construction has still not commenced over nine years later.

"Poor available infrastructure is not in the state’s interest and something must be done."

He said stage one of construction already had environmental approval and the ability to handle livestock exports.

"However, there is no holding yard in this area," he said.

"And to put one near the wharf would be an inappropriate use of land.

"It is my view, and that of the Premier and State Government, that consideration be given to export through a new port facility in James Point."

He said he anticipated stage one of construction would be announced shortly.

"It is my aim to see vessels lined up at James Point within two years time," he said.
